Using computational methods and robust procedures GV8 predicts the levels of daylight and sunlight that will be available both within and around new developments.
Evolution
In 2007, the simulation services provided by ERG evolved into a professional practice (called Aurea Consult) which was headed by Dr. Patxi Hernandez. Under the leadership of Dr. Rory Walsh, the practice evolved again in 2016 into BPG3 before rebranding in 2022 to GV8.
2003
The Energy Research Group UCD develop the capacity to predict daylight sunlight levels and energy performance using computational methods.
2007
The simulation services provided by ERG evolve into a professional practice, headed by Dr. Patxi Hernandez, called Aurea Consult.
2010
Rory Walsh is employed as a daylight sunlight analyst
2013
Aurea Consult expands to provide Daylight & Sunlight services to ESB Commercial Properties during the design and planning phases of their HQ redevelopment in Dublin city centre.
2016
The practice is formalised in Ireland as BPG3 under the leadership of Dr. Rory Walsh
2017
BPG3 plays an instrumental role in the establishment of quantitative daylight sunlight testing as the approach recommended in new ministerial planning guidelines
2022
As part of open consultation process BPG3 makes positive contribution to the drafting of the daylight sunlight guidelines present within DCC’s latest development plan.
2022
With an eye to the future the practice rebrands to GV8.
Expertise & Approach
Our Specialisation in Natural Light Assessment
Driven by the conviction that predictive modelling plays a crucial role in designing attractive, healthy, and sustainable developments, GV8 specialises in assessing natural light. Our expertise lies in predicting the impact of new developments on neighbouring properties, providing essential information for informed planning decisions.
Commitment to Scientific Accuracy
Having invested significantly in the science underlying daylight prediction, we stand confident in the validity, accuracy, and repeatability of our modelling outputs. GV8 believes in delving deep into the details of a problem to secure better results, producing daylight reports that can withstand the highest levels of expert scrutiny.
Expertise in Urban Site Projects
A key strength we've developed is preparing daylight reports for challenging urban sites. By fully considering daylight standards and their relationship to wider planning policies, we carefully balance the protection of existing amenities with the creation of new ones.
Navigating the Dynamic Field of Daylight Assessment
The assessment of daylight sunlight is an ever-changing field, filled with active debates and continuous updates. At GV8, we provide the professional oversight and specialist expertise needed to navigate the intricacies of daylight standards, their interplay with planning policies, and legal systems.
Adopting a rigorous approach in all testing GV8 produces daylight sunlight assessments that can withstand the highest levels of expert scrutiny.

Our Team
Dr. Rory Walsh
BEng PhD MScSP
Rory is a building performance engineer with key competencies in energy, comfort, and daylight modelling. Specialising in the assessment of daylight adequacy in a planning and development context Rory has had cause to write and review many daylight reports over the past ten years. Rory acts as principal consultant with GV8.
Dr. Patxi Hernandez
PhD LEED AP
With a background in building performance and energy engineering Patxi was one of the first professionals to offer quantitative daylight testing in Ireland. Patxi is a qualified LEED AP with key competencies in the areas of lifecycle analysis and zero energy buildings.
Dmytrii Ogir
MArch
With a background in 3D modelling and rendering Dmytrii is responsible for building the geometry which underpins all of GV8’s computational testing. Dmytrii takes principal responsibility for the development of accurate context models for use in daylight impact testing.
Oksana Ogir
BArch
With competencies in both architecture and modelling Oksana prepares 3D models for import to our analysis software. Oksana takes principal responsibility for translating 2D schematics of the proposed design into 3D daylight models.
