The Haven

In 2021 GV8 (trading as BPG3 at the time) was engaged by the Quinlan Group to assess the daylight sunlight levels associated with a proposed development in Tallaght. The proposed development related principally to the delivery of a mixed-use development including 318 no. BTR  apartments and approximately 2,000sqm of commercial floor space.

Located on a c. 1.25 ha site at Belgard Square East the development adopted a perimeter block layout organised around a new central recreational space. One of the key challenges faced with this project was the need account for the self-shading present on the internal elevations of the scheme.

Having been engaged at an early stage in the design process GV8 was able to work with HJL, on a room by room, basis to identify the opportunities that existed to maximise the amount of natural light that could be secured in each case. In many cases it was possible to achieve appreciable improvements through careful selection of glazed areas, head height and balcony placement.

Key Services Provided Included:

• Vertical Sky Component (VSC) testing to assess loss of skylight access to neighbouring accommodation.

• Annual Probable Sunlight Hours (APSH) testing to assess the loss of sunlight to neighbouring accommodation.

• Sun on Ground (SOG) testing to assess the loss of sunlight to neighbouring recreation spaces.

• Production of supplementary shadow casting imagery.

• Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) testing of all accommodation within the proposed development

• Supplementary Average Daylight Factor (ADF) testing

• Sunlight access testing for all units within the proposed development

• Sun on Ground (SOG) testing of all proposed recreation spaces
